MEC LEHARI APPLAUDS APPREHENSION OF ILLEGAL MINERS

The North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari has congratulated the police team that apprehended the 77 illegal miners between the 14th and 18th April 2022. The multi-disciplinary team comprised the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Illicit Mining Team, Orkney Visible Policing and Detectives and the Mining Rescue Team.

MEC Sello Lehari said law enforcement must deal with all forms of deviancies and illegal mining will not be allowed anywhere in the Province.

“Illegal mining has been a thorn in the flesh of government. We have been fighting it for some time now and I am glad that we are working towards ending it. Mining is a great vessel in  growing the economy, however it must be done legally. Congratulations to the team that is assisting in fighting all illegal activities that are collapsing our economy.” said MEC Lehari. He further appealed to community members to work with both the Department and the Police in fighting crime.

“Illegal activities happen on a daily basis within our communities. What is sad is that community members keep quiet about such, and even harbour the criminals. We can’t fight crime alone. We need the assistance of communities to root out wrongdoing. Share whatever information of criminality with the Police”, implored MEC Lehari.

The 77 arrested illegal miners have been identified as coming from Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
